Jupiter waterways are like tropical turquoise jewels that attract new residents and visitors in the thousands. Recreation, economy, coastal habitat and our own well-being are directly related to the well-being of the ocean, inlet, river and lagoon. Locals know that water quality is steadily declining, along with fish and marinelife populations. Mangrove loss is part of the problem.
Introducing the Mangrove Project: Year Two of our community awareness initiative to spark conversation, curiousity and let every resident and visitor in Jupiter and Tequesta know "Mangroves matter!".
We began in August 2023 when we rescued red mangrove propagules that were stranded above the tideline north of Cato's Bridge and along the Jupiter beachfront. The rescued propagules became "mangrove ambassadors" and to date over 500 have been displayed on local business windows. You can visit them Spring 2025 at one of our 20 local small business partners listed below. In the summer, they will be planted to help restore the shoreline of the Indian River Lagoon.
Funded in part by SURFING'S EVOLUTION AND PRESERVATION FOUNDATION.

HABITAT
Mangroves provide refuge, food and nursery grounds for a wide array of local wildlife such as heron, snook, manatees and sea turtles.
CLEAN WATER
Mangroves help maintain healthy water conditions by absorbing nitrates, phosphates and other harmful chemicals that run into the waterways.
SHORELINE PROTECTION
Dense mangrove roots help accumulate soil and slow down water flows to reduce coastal erosion.
REGULATE CLIMATE
Mangroves remove carbon from the air and store it in the sediment around their roots at a rate 10x greater than tropical rainforests.

Introducing the Vertical Oyster Garden Project: our community awareness initiative kicking off Phase 1 planning and prep summer 2025 to assemble vertical oyster gardens with recycled oyster shells donated by local businesses. In Phase 2, we will install them by hanging them from local docks to attract living oysters and add educational displays and signage at business and public waterfronts. Over time, these oyster gardens will become home to hundreds of oysters that will help clean the Loxahatchee River and Indian River Lagoon.
IMPROVE WATER QUALITY
One oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water daily! They're capable of filtering harmful particles as tiny as .05 microns, including bacteria, viruses, phytoplankton and suspended sediments.
REDUCE ALGAE BLOOMS
Oysters can increase levels of healthy dissolved oxygen and decrease harmful nitrogen and phosphorous levels, lowering the likelihood of toxic algae blooms.
HABITAT & FOOD
Oyster reefs create a sheltered area for mangroves to take root, resulting in a thriving habitat and food source for local wildlife such as fish, crabs, birds and shrimp.
SHORELINE PROTECTION
Oyster reefs can serve as a barrier along shorelines, preventing strong storms and tidal changes from causing coastal erosion.
PROMOTE HEALTHY SEAGRASS BEDS
Facilitate in the regrowth and strengthening of seagrass areas by buffering wave energy and promoting sediment deposits.
Soon, we'll have plenty of opportunities to construct vertical oyster gardens, install out in the field, create educational displays and promote the project. Contact us to let us know you're interested and we'll reach out when the time comes.
